The Morphicon helps NLP systems to handle cases of inflectional morphology. This module is made up of two components: morphoRules, which contains a set of regular expression rules, and morphoDB, a database of irregular word-forms. Morphology production is guided by the principle of “lexical priority”, which can block out some expression rules in benefit of ready-made morphological forms. Thus, in the case of text generation, the system looks up the word in morphoDB, and if not found, then an appropriate rule from morphoRules is applied.
